August is that month of the year that a self-employed composer/musician dreads most. Quite simply – everyone’s away on holiday, so nothing’s really going to get done – and so it has been this August for me and ‘Ruby’.
Still – there is an upside. Look at the weather we’ve had this summer – simply wonderful … and Britt & I were lucky enough to get away for a very special holiday back in April, too!
Meanwhile, I’ve been reading all sorts of stories in the Press about MORE cutbacks and EVEN LESS funding for the Arts – so does this make Ruby’s journey harder than ever? I don’t believe so. I’ve long believed that getting a project like ‘Ruby’ to work is about creating energy and letting that energy bring the project to life.
So – where does that energy come from?
Well – the energy comes from those involved and their belief in the show. We were very lucky, … Read more
Unfortunately (my fault) the June Blog was never posted – but here’s a combined June/July Blog instead … with an August one to follow soon!

To say that “things could’ve gone smoother and cheaper” is a massive understatement, but at the end of last year (and those of you who witnessed my aftershow speech at Merchant Adventurers’ Hall will know this already) we triumphed against adversity and produced something of real value and for me and my wife Britt, something very special indeed.
Along the way we had frustrations and huge disappointments – but far more important than that, we met some extraordinary people, brilliant performers, tireless enthusiasts and the kind of support I never dared to dream of.
So – what … Read more
I thought it would be good to try and write something about Ruby’s progress on a regular basis rather than sporadic post appearing from time to time so – Welcome to the ‘Ruby & the 13th Door’ monthly blog!
You could be forgiven for thinking that things have gone a bit quiet recently, but here’s a list of what’s actually been happening:
– 2 Recording Sessions with the ‘Kids’ Chorus’ (with at least one more to follow)
– 1 Recording Session with Megan-Hollie Robertson (our brilliant ‘Older Ruby’)
– Frantic editing of Film and Music from the Live Shows in December (with, I have to say, some stunning performances from ALL the Principals and Choruses)
– A meeting with Sarah Smith, the Co-writer and Director of the brilliant animated Film ‘Arthur Christmas’
– Meetings with various Producers
– Meetings about the ‘Ruby Education Pack’ – with the aim of producing all the … Read more

Once you’ve enrolled for an audition (remember, you only need to attend ONE of the audition sessions) you’ll be given access to the singing audition piece. On the day you’ll also be asked to prepare a short acting piece (don’t worry – we’re here to advise you on what to choose) – and the day will start with some warm-up exercises and a bit of choreographed movement and dancing.
Oh – and don’t forget – we’re also looking for an ‘Adult Chorus’ – so don’t forget to tell your parents, if they’d be interested in joining the cast too!
Keep checking here for more details – and hope to see you soon!
